Yeah, IRC is still around in quite a number of places, although it is just not quite as obvious and available as IM and email, or in-game chats and ventrilo.

I was kicking around in my head the question you pose, "why is it we fear getting in 'trouble'?" I was thinking this the other day. I sometimes hide my feelings on some topics, obviously so I don't piss off my next potential boss before I've even met him. But then I realized, why the hell should I do that? Not only what are the chances, but life will certainly freakin' go on, ya know? People like celebrities can show us that even completely horrible mistakes that are televised to millions of people don't suddenly make their lives come to a grinding halt. Let alone me and any of my mistakes, foibles, or opinions that might differ from someone else.

It's a good question, although I admit I do not participate in most social networking sites. I'll have an account, but my MySpace is empty (I use it to comment on three friends' journal postings), and any others are just there to access stuff like pictures. I'm proficient enough to have my own space, so I stick to it. :)
